Dreamer's Island will transport you to a time and place not far from our own, although it is set decades in the future. It's very easy to imagine a world were creativity is suppressed and science must be hidden. The characters are developed enough to leave you wanting to know what happens after the book is done. Far beyond the value of the edition, get it now!

I picked up "Dreamer's Island" and didn't lay it back down until it was finished. Hummel's narration is as vivid and shifting as any fever dream, and the world that she creates is just as frighteningly convincing. This is a tale that will haunt as it entertains -- a treat for readers and writers of all ages. Highly recommended!
I was never much of a science fiction fan until I read Dreamer's Island. The author has spun a novel with vivid descriptions and phenomenal writing that brought Devil's Island and its inhabitants to life in my mind's eye. Intrigue, mystery, suspense, and the resilient bond of love between a parent and a child are just some of the elements Gretchen Hummel weaved into her futuristic novel that kept me page turning. Dreamer's Island is truly a reader's paradise.
Dreamer's Island is a fascinating novel that not only kept me engaged in the riveting story, but also got me thinking on several levels. It is not only a story of struggle and resilience, loss and love, but also an allegory of good and evil, showing the life-giving power of kinship versus the cruelty of parochialism. The characters came alive for me. I always judge a book by whether I think about the characters after I have finished the book and wonder what continues to happen in their lives. This was definitely the case with this book. I hope Ms. Hummel will write a follow-up novel so I can see how the lives of Blair and her companions unfold.
In Dreamer's Island Gretchen Hummel brings to life a post-apocalyptic future with characters as believable as the folks next door and a tale as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

From the beginning I was gripped by Hummel's ability to pull together science and imagined technology with myth and spirituality, a winning combination made even better by perfectly-timed bits of humor from the heroine's Shakesphere-quoting bird. The result is an unforgettable story of a world divided by prejudice and loss, and of the brave few who search for answers in plague-induced dreams where they must confront their inner demons and face their deepest fears. The book is a page-turner from start to finish, one I would highly recommend even if you don't consider yourself a science fiction/fantasy fan.
I generally don't read books like this, but it caught my attention and kept me reading, ravenously, until the very end. Can't wait for the sequel!
